As a professional Digital Marketer with over fifteen years of experience, I am often asked for my expertise regarding how to select the best digital marketing company for businesses of all sizes. It is imperative to find a digital marketing firm that will represent you and your business the best way possible.

Here are three of the most important considerations I've found when it comes to selecting the best digital marketing company.

1. Identify your needs

Are you looking for SEO and SEM expertise to improve your search engine rankings? A stronger social media presence? Or are you more interested in reaching a specific audience through research, data and demographic studies? Begin by making a list of everything you'd like your future digital marketing company to achieve.

This list could include.

  • Website Development/Blogging
  • Search Engine Optimization/Search Engine Marketing
  • Social Media Management
  • Programmatic Advertising
  • Contextual, Behavioral, Audience & GEO Targeting and Retargeting
  • IP Address or WIFI Targeting
  • Email Marketing
  • Creative (multimedia & pre-roll ad video production)
  • Custom Apps/Backend Development
  • Analytics

2. Research their strengths

Not all digital marketing firms are created equal and just because they might be big doesn’t mean that they’re better. Of course, partnering with a small firm might be limited with the resources that a larger company would offer. Your research should show if they are exceedingly creative? Have they done work, even if it’s outside of your wheelhouse, that you admire? What venders do they use and what certifications do they hold? How is their SEO/SEM presence? Were you driven to their website because it was the first one that popped up on Google? If so, this might be a good indication that they can apply the same methods to your business.

3. Transparency is key

To that point, what are the metrics they use to consider success? Find out the company’s methods for deducing what’s working and what’s not. Do they offer any assurances with their performance factors? You’ll want a firm that’s open about these sorts of things, this way, you won’t be left in the dark when it comes time to make these deductions yourself.

In the end, staying firm to your convictions and hiring a digital marketing company who presents a strategy versus products and who is willing to work with your business plan will result in better outcome for all parties involved. Take your time, do your research, be flexible but hold them accountable where it counts and you'll find the right firm to partner with to take your company to the next level.
